Chelex 100 (purified form of Dowex A1), a chelating resin, is used frequently in radiochemical separations and for pre-concentrations of trace elements prior to analysis. Unfortunately, the properties of the resin are not well characterized. Our laboratory has initiated a program to characterize the resin. Distribution coefficients have been measured between aqueous solutions of several elements and the resin. The measurements are performed either with radioactive tracer or using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The project is continuing.
