Chemistry 379
Selected Chemistry Topics for the Elementary Teacher
Chemistry 379 is a new course designed for the future elementary teacher. It consists of 3 credits and meets
for two one hour sessions per week, with a lab that meets for two hours, one day a week.
Chemistry 379 may be used as an alternative for the required Chemistry 101 for
some elementary education students.
However, like Chemistry 101, it will stress Chemistry content appropriate for the elementary teacher.
It will include some teaching methodology, although it will be mainly a content course.
Who Should Take Chemistry 379?
Students fitting into one of the following three categories should consider enrolling in Chemistry 379:
- Students who have had a very good high school, or college, Chemistry course, recently, preferably
having received a grade of B or better, and who can remember much of the course content. These students
may get a course substitution for the required Chemistry 101 course by taking Chemistry 379.
- Students who wish to take a second Chemistry course in addition to Chemistry 101 on their Elementary
Science Group Minor or Major.
- Students needing additional credits to satisfy the 6- and 9-hour requirements for 300-numbered courses
in the Science Group and Minor, respectively.
Essentially, content will include materials constituting a full-year Chemistry course, which did not fit into
our one-semester Chemistry 101 course. Some examples would be:
- Rates of Reaction
- Introduction to Organic Chemistry
- Petroleum
- Arithmetic of Chemistry (moles, ppm, etc.)
- Air and Water Pollution
- Energy, fats and oils
- Introduction to BioChemistry
- Carbohydrates
- Lipids
- Proteins
Laboratories will accompany most of the above topics and will include activities, which may be used in the elementary school.
